A Career in Real Estate – Licencing Requirements
 
A career in real estate is appealing to candidates that prefer to take control of their careers. They are individuals who enjoy working and helping people. They are self-motivated, love the flexibility of creating their own hours and have the opportunity to create the lifestyle that they have always dreamt of.
 
A Candidate must register with the Ontario Real Estate Association (ORE) www.orea.com to be able to complete the required courses. There are 3 steps involved in order to become a licenced Salesperson.
 
Courses can be completed by e-learning, correspondence or in class
 
Step 1: Pre-licencing

Candidates must complete the required pre-licencing course which consists of 3 courses within 18 months from the date of registration
 
Course 1: Real Estate as a Professional Career

Overviews benefits, challenges and limitations

Course 2: Land, Structures and Real Estate Trading

Focuses on Property ownership rights & limitations, current land registry systems, statutory & legal requirements.
 
Course 3: Real Estate Transaction – General The Residential Real Estate Transactio

Follows the residential real estate transaction from initial listing to final negotiations to preparation of the Agreement of Purchase and Sale.
 
Step 2: Articling
Once you are licensed and registered with RECO, (The Real Estate Council of Ontario) and working as a Salesperson in a Real Estate Brokerage, you will enter a two year articling phase. During this phase, you must complete the following courses:
 
MANDATORY
  • Residential or Commercial
  • Real Property Law
 
Plus: “1” Elective course from the list below
  • Principles of Appraisals
  • Real Estate Investment Analysis
  • Principles of Mortgage Financing
  • Principles of Property Management
 
Step 3: Continuing Education 
Mandatory Continuing Education Courses
All Registered Salespeople, Broker of Records, and Brokers must complete 24 credit hours on an ongoing basis within every 2-year Registration Cycle
